WHAT A COMEBACK!

The 12th ranked Michigan Wolverines made the biggest comeback victory in Big House history against their in-state rivals Michigan State by beating them 43-35 in triple overtime. Michigan had their backs against the wall almost this entire game but they came out with one of the greatest comebacks I have ever seen.

Michigan State played very good early taking a 17-10 lead going into halftime. In the third quarter, Michigan State's starting quarterback Drew Stanton went out with an injury. Despite losing him, the Spartans took an even bigger lead by getting a field goal in the third quarter and a touchdown in the fourth quarter to take a 27-10 lead.

At that time it looked like Michigan State was going to win. With a little over 7 minutes left in the game, Chad Henne threw a 50 yard pass to Braylon Edwards. Michigan failed to get a touchdown after that catch but they kicked a field goal to make the score 27-13 MSU. On the following kickoff, Michigan tried an on-side kick. The ball failed to bounce 10 yards but it hit a MSU player and Michigan picked up the ball. During that possession Chad Henne threw a long touchdown pass to Braylon Edwards to put them within 7 points. Michigan stopped MSU on the next drive and got the ball back. Michigan drove down the field once again when Chad Henne threw another touchdown pass to Braylon Edwards(27 yards) to tie the game at 27-27 with 2:59 left. MSU got the ball one final time but missed a 50 yard field goal when the clock expired sending the game into overtime.

In the first overtime Michigan started with the ball on offense. They failed to score a touchdown but Garret Rivas kicked a fieldgoal. MSU then got the ball and drove down to Michigan's 4 yard line. On third and one, Michigan stuffed MSU forcing them to kick a field goal. MSU made it sending the game into a second overtime.

In the second overtime MSU started out with the ball and scored a touchdown forcing Michigan to score. Michigan answered the call and scored again; but instead of Edwards, it was Jason Avant who hauled in a great pass in the back of the endzone to send the game into triple overtime.

Braylon Edwards finished the game off in the third overtime by catching another touchdown pass to give Michigan a 6 point lead. Michigan made the two point conversion to take a 8 point lead. They then stopped MSU to finish off the greatest comeback in Michigan history(at home).

There were so many players who helped Michigan make this incredible comeback. Here are a few of them.

Michigan's starting freshman quarterback Chad Henne had an incredible game. He threw for 281 yards and 4 touchdowns. Almost all of his stats came in the fourth quarter and the overtimes when he was leading the Wolverines to victory. This freshman looks so good. This is the third game where he has lead Michigan back from behind to win the game.

Braylon Edwards had been very quiet the last couple of games. He was virtually not a factor in this game until the fourth quarter. He put Michigan on his back by making great catch after great catch. He ended up with 11 catches, 192 yards, and 3 touchdowns-including this touchdown catch to tie the game at 27-27.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Michigan's freshman running back Mike Hart also had a incredible game. He ran for 221 yards on 33 carries. He also scored Michigan's first touchdown. This was his third straight game he has rushed for at least 200 yards. He continues to impress as well.

Garrett Rivas was the unsung hero for the Wolverines in this one. He kicked 3 fieldgoals, all huge. He also made every single point after attempt. Without his performance, Michigan might not have walked away with this victory.

Here are my final thoughts on this game....This game was incredible. Not many people were expecting Michigan to come back and win this game. This game was just as good if not better then last year when they came back against Minnesota when they were down 28-7 in the fourth quarter. Michigan showed some great heart by coming back to win this game. This game was awesome beyond words. It soon will not be forgotten. GO BLUE!

Michigan vs. MSU

The Michigan Wolverines play the Michigan State Spartans today at the Big House. This "rivalry" has been one-sided with Michigan winning most of the games. Michigan State is 3-1 in Big Ten play and the Wolverines are undefeated in Big Ten play. This might be a closer game then people think. Michigan is favored to win but knowing the Wolverines; I would not be suprised if MSU pulled off the upset. Either way, this should be a great game.

GO BLUE!

Joey Harrington

Going into this season, the Detroit Lions needed Joey Harrington(their starting quarterback) to step it up if they wanted to have a successful season. Harrington is having a great year and has become the leader of the Lions.

The Lions drafted Harrington third overall in the 2002 NFL Draft with very high expectations. In just his first season, Harrington became the starter for the Lions. He started in 12 games and threw 12 touchdowns along with a high 16 interceptions. He completed just 50.1 percent of his passes and had a very low 59.9 passer rating. In 2003 Harrington became the full time starter and improved but not by a lot. He started in all 16 games and threw just 17 touchdown passes. He also threw a very high 22 interceptions. He completed 55.8 percent of his passes and had one of the lowest passer ratings in the entire NFL(63.9). Through those two seasons the Lions were a dismal 8-24 with zero road wins.

This season Harrington looks a lot better. He has throw 10 touchdown passes and only 3 interceptions. His completion percentage is at 62.7%. The stat that jumps out the most is his 94.9 passer rating. That about 30 points higher then the previous two seasons.

With Harrington leading the helm; the Lions have done awesome. Detroit is 4-2 with a shocking 3-0 road record. They have beat some good teams and they are finally starting to learn how to win close games on the road. If Harrington plays like he has been for the rest of the season; the Lions will have a chance to make it into the playoffs.

This is the year that Harrington has to show the Lions if he is for real or not. So far, it looks like he is going to be the Lions' starting quarterback for years to come.

The Curse is Lifted!

The Boston Red Sox have finally won a World Series after beating the Cardinals last night to sweep the series. Manny Ramirez was the MVP of the series. What a season for the Sox. This World Series win is for all the fans in Boston, they deserve this the most. Finally the curse is over!

One Win Away

The Boston Red Sox are one win away from winning the World Series after beating the Cardinals last night to take a 3-0 lead in the series. The Sox probably think they have it wrapped up but they have to remember the great 3-0 comeback they made on the Yankees in the previous series. Don't blow it Boston!

Two Great Wins

Over the weekend in Detroit there was a great college football win and a great NFL win. I was gone so I didn't see either of them but here are the links to the game recaps along with a short game summary.

We start in the NFL where the Lions beat the Giants 28-13 on the road. Joey Harrington had an awesome game throwing for 230 yards on 18/22 passing along with 2 touchdown passes. The Lions are now 3-0 on the road and 4-2 on the season.

The other big win in Detroit was in college where the 11th ranked Michigan Wolverines
beat the 12th ranked Purdue Boilermakers 16-14. Rivas hit the game winning field goal for the Wolverines with only a few minutes left. Michigan's Mike Hart ran for 206 yards and caught a touchdown pass. Michigan is now 7-1.

Pistons Season Preview

The Detroit Pistons won the NBA Championship last year in stunning fashion over the LA Lakers. With the 04-05 season just a few weeks away the Pistons must now forget about last season and focus on defending their championship.

Over the offseason I think the Pistons improved their team even more. The Pistons signed Antonio McDyess to replace Okur, who signed with the Utah Jazz. McDyess has been in the NBA for a number of years. He had an allstar season a few years ago but has been hampered by injuries ever since. McDyess looks to be healthy going into this season. The Pistons also signed Carlos Delfino, their second pick in the 2003 draft. Delfino has been playing in Argentina his whole career. Coming to play in the NBA will be tough for this rookie guard.

The worst thing the Pistons did this offseason was trade away Corliss Williamson for Derrick Coleman. Coleman has better career numbers than Williamson but Coleman is older and his stats have been much lower in the past few seasons. Coleman has also been injured a lot in his career, something the Pistons probably don't want to deal with. The only good reason the Pistons made this trade was because it freed up some salary cap money for the future. Even if it did free up some money, I still didn't like this trade and I won't until Coleman proves to be a good replacement for Williamson.

The starting five for the Pistons this season should be the same as the last with Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace, Tayshaun Prince, Rip Hamilton, and Chauncey Billups anchoring the front line.

Ben Wallace, the NBA's best defensive player, had some surgury over the offseason that I couldn't find much information about. He might not be ready for the start of the season but he should play for most of the year.

Rasheed Wallace was the final piece to the Pistons' championship last year when the Pistons got him at the trade deadline. Detroit resigned him in the offseason to a long term deal. He now gets to play a full season for the Pistons. He should have a great season.

Tayshaun Prince continues to get better and better. He had a good playoffs for the Pistons on route to their title. He plays great defense and he can also provide a nice spark on the offensive end of the court.

Rip Hamilton had a great season and playoffs last year. He has the best mid-range jumper in the NBA. He is very quick player. He is also more durable then people might think. Rip should have another good season averaging around 20 points a game.

Chauncey Billups had his best year ever last season. He had a career high average in points and was the MVP of the Finals. He was really become the offensive leader of the Pistons.

The key bench players for the Pistons will be Antonio McDyess, Elden Campbell, Darvin Ham, and Lindsey Hunter. Those are the four main guys who the Pistons will be counting on to provide some spark off the bench.

A guy who I didn't put on that list of important bench players was Darko Milicic(click here for an article I wrote about him a while back). Darko was the Pistons' first pick in the 2003 draft(second overall). The Pistons could have selected Carmello Anothony but they passed him up. Darko rode the bench all last season. A few weeks ago Larry Brown announced that Darko wasn't ready yet to play a lot of minutes this season either. I trust Brown and if he thinks Darko isn't ready, then Darko isn't ready. Darko's time will hopefully come some day. It will be tough as a fan though to watch Darko ride the bench all season again.

Here are some other players I didn't talk about who are on or are trying to make the Pistons' roster:Nigel Dixon, Ronald Dupree, Horace Jenkins, Smush Parker, Rickey Paulding, and Terrence Shannon.

Here are my final thoughts for the Pistons going into the 04-05 season: The Pistons sorta snuck up on everyone last year and won the title. This season will be a lot different. Other teams will play them like they(Detroit) have a mark on their back. Everyone will be trying to beat the champs. I think the Pistons are still the best team in the league and I think they will repeat as champs just like from 90-91. It will be a lot harder but I think the Pistons will be up to the task. You have to at least expect the Pistons to finish second in their division and make it to the Eastern Conference Finals for the third straight year. Anything less than that will be a huge letdown. Here's to another great season of Pistons Basketball that will hopefully end like this.

Sox in the Series!

The Boston Red Sox completed the most historic comeback in the history of major league baseball by beating the New York Yankees 10-3 on Wednesday night to win the ALCS 4 games to 3. With the win, the Sox will now play in the World Series. The Red Sox were down in this series 3-0 before winning 4 straight. David Ortiz won game 4 and 5 for the Sox on game winning hits(Ortiz won the MVP of the ALCS). In game 6 and 7 it was all about the Red Sox who dominated both games.

I am just starting to realize this incredible comeback for the Red Sox. I can't even begin to comprehend it, all baseball fans probably won't see how incredible this comeback really was for years to come.

This was the first time in the history of baseball a team that was down 3-0 in a series came back to win it.

Another aspect of this comeback is the fact of what team did it. How did the Red Sox-the "cursed" Red Sox-come this far back to beat their nemesis the New York Yankees? We might never know. The Sox and their fans must savor this great comeback and trip to the World Series but the season isn't over yet. It would have been better if the Sox lost to the Yankees then to make such a great comeback and to lose in the World Series. Don't let us down Boston! Go Sox!

Do You Believe!?

Aside from the Tigers, the Boston Red Sox are my favorite baseball team(you might have noticed the 4 Red Sox related blogs listed in my "Hall of Fame Blogs"). I have been watching the ALCS despite the Tigers not in them and what the Red Sox are doing with the Yankees is incredible. The Red Sox started this ALCS against the Yankees losing the first 3 games. In game 4 and 5,at home, David Ortiz won it for Boston in extra innings. Last night in game 6, the Sox won again-this time on the road in New York. Not a sole was giving the "cursed" Boston Red Sox a chance to even comeback and force a game 7 after being down 3-0 in the series. Prior to last night, a team down 3-0 had never come back to force a game 7.

We now look to game 7 tonight. The Red Sox have come so far back that it would be an absolute travisty if they lost. If the Sox win, it will be the biggest comeback in the history of sports. The Red Sox must win. This has to finally be their year to beat the Yankees and make it too the World Series. GO SOX!

Lions 10 Packers 38

The Lions got embarrassed at home on Sunday when they faced the Packers. Green Bay took it too Detroit and smoked them for a 38-10 win. The Lions were only down 17-10 at halftime but in the second half Green Bay dominated. Harrington had a bad day along with the entire offense. Roy Williams suited up but he didn't play at all. The Lions are now 3-2. Detroit plays against the Giants next week. Head on over to Lions Blog or Lion Backer for a complete game recap.

10/16 Notes

The 13th ranked Michigan Wolverines beat unranked Illinois 30-19. The big story of this game was of how Michigan's Mike Hart ran for 234 yards and a touchdown on 40 carries. Hart is just a freshman and this was an incredible performance. Hart really led the comeback for the Wolverines in the second half when they outscored Illinois 20-2. Michigan now looks to next Saturday when they go on the road against a very strong Purdue team.

The Detroit Lions will play the Green Packers on Sunday at home. The Lions are 3-1 and the Packers are a suprising 1-4. This is a great chance for the Lions to start the season 4-1 for the first time since 1991.

C'mon Ref! has re-entered itself into the blogging world. If you remember, C'mon Ref was a sports blog that was based on Detroit Sports just like mine. It has a new template now and so far it looks pretty good. Head on over and check it out.

10/15 Notes

The Detroit Lions have had some good injury news over the past couple of days. Roy Williams and Kevin Jones are probably going to play in Sunday's game vs. Green Bay. The Packers are a terrible 1-4. This is a great chance for the Lions to get another victory.

The Detroit Pistons started the pre-season on Wednesday with a victory over the Celtics. It is hard to believe how fast the offseason went for the Champs.

There has been almost no Detroit Red Wings' news because of the lockout. The only news that has come is that Chris Chelios is training with the US Bobsled Team. Go to On the Wings for all your lockout news.

The Detroit Tigers have ditched in signing Justin Verlander, the second pick in April's MLB Draft. It's tough to see the Tigers lose another potentially good pitcher.

Some Good News

When the Detroit Lions' star rookie receiver Roy Williams went out with an ankle sprain in Sunday's game vs. the Falcons, the worst thought was that it was going to be serious. Luckly he is only going to be out day to day. He could be ready for the game against the Packers next week but that is unknown at this time. Again we are thankful that it wasn't too serious.

Another Road Win

The Lions beat the previously 4-0 Falcons today 17-10. The Lions are now 3-1 and the Falcons are 4-1.

The Lions defense again won the game for them. They held Mike Vick to 196 yards passing and zero touchdowns. They also picked him off once and sacked sacked him 5 times. The Lions' D also forced 3 turnovers. The final turnover was at the end of the game when Atlanta was about to score on the Lions to tie the game at 17-17. Vick dropped back and fumbled the ball(the ball was knocked out by his own lineman!), and the Lions picked it up and then kneeled the ball to seal the win.

Joey Harrington didn't have a wonderful game but he did have another solid one. He threw for 146 yards and zero picks. He threw one touchdown pass to Hakim that went for 39 yards.

Detroit's star rookie wide receiver Roy Williams left the game with an ankle sprain that doesn't look too serious. He caught 3 passes for 18 yards in this one.

Artose Pinner ran for 68 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown. All three were career highs for this second year player.

This was a huge win for the Lions. This was their second straight road win. In the last 3 seasons combined, they had won zero road games! I think this game proved that they are for real. Everyone said that Mike Vick would destroy them, but it was the other way around. The Lions destroyed Vick and the entire Atlanta team. If the Lions would have scored some more in the third quarter, this game wouldn't have even been close. In both road victories this season, the Lions have won the game on a defensive stand at the end of the game. Both times they have forced a turnover. One of the main reasons the Lions are 3-1 is the fact that Harrington has really stepped it up. He has thrown 7 touchdown passes and only 2 interceptions. His completion rating is over 60 percent. He needed to be the leader this season and he has done exactly that.

The Lions are now 3-1. They face the Packers next week at home. The Lions are tied with the Vikings for first place in their division.

Chad Henne is the man!

The 14th ranked Michigan Wolverines were going into Saturday's game against the 13th ranked Minnesota Gophers knowing that this game would have huge implications for who would win the Big Ten title. Michigan is now 5-1 after beating Minnesota 27-24 and looks to be the strongest team in the Big Ten.

With a little over 3 minutes left in the game, Michigan was down 24-20 and was on their own 13 yard line. Michigan's Chad Henne led them down the field before throwing a 31 yard touchdown pass to Tyler Ecker with 1:57 left in the game. Michigan then held Minnesota off to win the game.

Chad Henne had another awesome performance. He threw for 328 yards on 33-49 passing, both records for a freshman at Michigan. He threw 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions(both interceptions came in the third quarter). This guy continues to impress. He seems to get better and better as the season goes on.

Heisman hopeful Braylon Edwards caught 10 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.

Michigan's freshman running back Mike Hart ran for 160 yards and a score. His 160 yards were a record for a freshman at Michigan. He also had 53 yards receiving.

This was another great win for Michigan. They have showed they can win against good teams. Even though they can celebrate this victory, harder tests come later in the season when they will face Purdue and Ohio State.

Football Games

This weekend there are another 2 big football games in Detroit, one in college and one in the NFL.

The 14th ranked Michigan Wolverines will go up against the 13th ranked Minnesota Gophers at the Big House. This game is a huge one for the Big Ten, whoever wins this game could have the inside track for the Rose Bowl. We should all remember last season when the Wolverines made one of the best comebacks of all time to beat Minnesota. Michigan was down 28-7 in the fourth quarter before storming back for a 38-35 victory. Michigan's star receiver Braylon Edwards should be the main player to watch for the game. He has had an incredible season and could be on his way to a Heisman nominee season. This should be another great matchup.

The other big game this weekend in Detroit is the Detroit Lions(2-1) going on the road against the Atlanta Falcons(4-0). Detroit went up against the Eagles 2 weeks ago and lost 30-13 despite the awesome performance by Roy Williams. The Lions will have to watch Atlanta's Mike Vick, and we all know what skills he brings to the table. We will see this weekend if the Lions are for real or if their 2-0 start was just because of the weak teams they faced.

Pitching Staff Grades

A few days ago,I started grading the Detroit Tigers based on the entire season. Now I am going to finish that by grading the pitching staff.

Nate Robertson B
This guy had a very good first half to the season going 9-4. The second half of the season he didn't play as good but he still ended up with a nice 12-10 record. Nate had a decent 4.90 ERA along with 155 strikouts. Next season we should see if this guy is for real or not.

Jamie Walker B
Walker had a good year as a reliever for the Tigers. He went 3-4, had a 3.20 ERA, and also had 53 strikouts in just 64 innings pitched.

Jeremy Bonderman B-
At the halfway point of the season, Bonderman wasn't doing very good. He was 5-7 and his ERA was near 6. Bonderman turned it around and finished the season great. He ended up with a 11-13 record while lowering is ERA a full run per game. He also had a team high 168 strikeouts in 184 innings pitched. Another good stat was his 2 comeplete games and 2 shutouts.

Ugueth Urbina B-
The Tigers signed Urbina in the offseason to be their closer. He did a fairly good job, saving 21 games out of 24 chances. He went 4-6 with a 4.50 ERA. His strikeout ratio was very high(56k's in 54 innings).

Gary Knotts B-
Knotts started the season very good but down the stretch he faltered a bit. He ended up with a decent 7-6 record but he had a high 5.25 ERA. This is another pitcher for the Tigers who has some nice potential.

Mike Maroth C+
After going a terrible 9-21 last season, Mike Maroth regained some respectability this season. He finished with a 11-13 record and a solid 4.31 ERA. I expect him to have an even better season next year.

Esteban Yan C+-Yan did decent in the 87 innings he pitched in. He strukeout 69 batters, went 3-6, and had a 3.83 ERA.

Wilfredo Ledezma C+
This is another young, talented reliever for the Tigers. Ledezma went 4-3 with a 4.39 ERA.

Al Levine C
Levine had a decent season for the Tigers. This reliever went 3-4 with a 4.58 ERA.

Jason Johnson D
The Tigers brought in Johnson to anchor this young pitching staff. He didn't do what he was supposed to,finishing the season with a terrible 8-15 record. He really got worse as the season progressed. I wouldn't be suprised if he isn't with the Tigers next season.

Note:I only graded players who pitched in 50 or more innings.

Final Thoughts:The Tigers pitching staff really was their weakness this season. They are young and inexperienced. I don't think some of the veteran pitchers did as good as they should have. Detroit finished 18 games under 500 this year and if their pitching staff would have done better, I think they could have been closer to 500. The pitcher that impressed me the most for the second half of the season was Jeremy Bonderman. He really picked it up near the end of the season. Here is what Roar of the Tigers said about Bonderman.

Bonderman has put up a 3.70 ERA since the All-Star Break. Even more impressive, over his past eight starts he went 5-3 with a 2.33 ERA. On the year he dominated batters, striking out 168 while walking just 73.

The Tigers going into next season will probably need to get an allstar caliber pitcher to help them out. Some of these young guns look good for Detroit but some of them may be a few years away, if ever. The Tigers must be at least 500 next year and if the pitching staff isn't better next season, I don't think that will happen.

Season Grades

The Detroit Tigers' season ended on Sunday with a victory. They finished the season with a record of 72-90. Although to most teams this would have been a bad season, this was a great one for the Tigers. The Tigers finished 29 games better than last season when they were 43-119, the second worst record of all time. During the midseason I graded each player. Now I am going to grade each player based on the entire season.

Carlos Guillen A+
As I mentioned before,Carlos Guillen was the best player for the Tigers this season. The Tigers traded for him in the offseason and he has turned out to be a great player. He hit 20 homeruns, batted 318, and collected 97 RBIs. Pudge and him were the only Tigers named to the All Star Game.

Ivan Rodriguez A-
Pudge brought something special to the Tigers this season. Detroit signed him in the offseason to lead the team. I think he did that despite finishing the second half of the season on a bad note. During the first few months of the season he was batting close to 400. He finished the season with 19 homeruns,86 RBIs, and batted 334.

Brandon Inge B
At the start of this season when the Tigers got Pudge, it looked like the Tigers were going to trade Inge. They ended up not trading him and he paid them back with a great season. He hit 13 homers, knocked in 64 runs, and batted 287.

Carlos Pena B
This young first baseman had a very strong season, something that was expected out of him. He hit 27 homers(a team high),collected 82 RBIs, and was walked 70 times(tied with Higginson for first on the team). The one thing he must improve on is his terrible 241 batting average and his super high 147 strikeouts. He looks to be a future superstar.

Rondell White B-
This guy had a very solid season. He hit 19 homers, batted 270, and batted in 67 RBIs. These were the exact numbers Detroit was looking for when they signed him in the offseason.

Omar Infante B-
This young second baseman replaced the injured Vina early into the season. He did good in his place hitting 16 homers, collecting 55 RBIs, and batting 264. He looks to be a very good player in the near future.

Craiq Monroe B-
This is another young player who looks to be a star. He hit 18 homers, batted in 72 runs, and hit 293. He will be going into his third season in 2005.

Dmitri Young C+
The Tigers lost Dmitri Young, their offensive leader of 03, early in the season but he still came back to play in 104 games. He hit 18 homers and knocked in 60 runners. This was a bit of a down year after his allstar season in 03.

Bobby Higginson C
Higgy has been playing for the Tigers for a long time and this season started good but ended bad. He ended up with 12 homers and 46 RBIs. His top stat was probably his team best 70 walks.

Eric Munson C
The Tigers really expected more out of this guy after his great rookie season. He only got 49 RBIs and batted a terrible 212.

Alex Sanchez C-
Alex Sanchez had a bad season. He started the season batting first in the Tigers' lineup but he only got 7 walks. He had a 322 batting average but a weak 335 on-base percentage. He needs to step it up next season if he wants to regain the starting bat role.

Note-I only graded players who played in 75 or more games.

Final Thoughts
The Tigers offense really improved this season. Last season they had the worst offense in the MLB. This season they had 7 players who hit 18 homeruns or more. They also had 8 players who hit over 260 and had over 60 RBIs. Early in the season they were averaging the most runs a game out of the entire league. I think that they provided enough runs for the pitching staff on a fairly consistent basis. This lineup should be even better to watch next season with some of these younger players getting even better.

In the next few days, I will grade the pitching staff.

Another Win

I didn't see this game but on Saturday, Michigan beat Indiana 35-14. Braylon Edwards had another marvelous game with 2 long touchdown receptions. Michigan is now 4-1 with a 2-0 record in Big Ten play.
